Preparing for Your Dermal Filler Treatment
To ensure optimal results and minimize bruising or swelling, follow these guidelines before your appointment:
Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements for 7–10 days prior, including aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oil, vitamin E, and ginkgo biloba (consult your physician before stopping prescribed medications)
Limit alcohol consumption for 24–48 hours before treatment
Avoid scheduling filler treatments within two weeks of dental work or other facial procedures
Arrive with a clean face, free of makeup or skincare products
Stay well-hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment
Inform your provider of any active cold sores, skin infections, or recent illness
Consider taking arnica or bromelain supplements several days before treatment to reduce bruising (consult your provider first)
After Your Dermal Filler Treatment
Proper aftercare supports the best possible outcome and helps your results settle beautifully:
Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging treated areas for 24–48 hours unless instructed otherwise by your provider
Sleep with your head elevated for the first 1–2 nights to minimize swelling
Apply ice or a cold compress for 10–15 minutes at a time to reduce swelling (avoid direct pressure)
Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, hot tubs, or excessive heat for 24–48 hours
Skip makeup for at least 6–12 hours after treatment if possible
Refrain from consuming alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment
Avoid facials, facial massage, or other facial treatments for at least one week
Stay well-hydrated and use gentle skincare for several days following treatment
Avoid dental work for at least two weeks after treatment
Contact your provider immediately if you experience unusual pain, skin color changes, or vision changes
Mild swelling, redness, and tenderness are normal and typically resolve within a few days. Results continue to refine as the filler settles over the next 1–2 weeks.

It depends on the area and how much volume you have lost, but these are the ranges most patients fall into. Lips: 1 syringe. Chin: 1 to 2. Under eyes: 1. Smile lines: 1 to 2. Cheeks or mid face: 2 to 4. Jawline: 2 to 4. Temples: 1 to 2. First-time lip filler is almost always one syringe. We would rather you start conservatively and add than overfill and dissolve. Deeper work on cheeks or jawline needs more product because it is rebuilding support, not adding softness. Your provider quotes you before anything is injected.

We carry Juvederm Voluma XC and Volux XC, SKINVIVE by Juvederm, the full RHA Collection (RHA 2, RHA 3, RHA 4 and RHA Redensity), Belotero Balance and Belotero Volume, and Obagi saypha MagIQ and ChIQ. All of those are hyaluronic acid, which means they can be dissolved if you ever want them reversed. Different fillers behave differently, so your provider chooses based on the area and the result you want rather than what is in stock. We also offer Radiesse, which is calcium hydroxylapatite rather than hyaluronic acid. It stimulates your own collagen and works well along the jawline and on hands, but it cannot be dissolved, so we only use it where that trade-off makes sense for you. SKINVIVE is different again: it is not a volumizing filler but microdroplet hyaluronic acid that improves smoothness and hydration in the cheeks.

Lip filler typically lasts six to twelve months, shorter than most other areas, because lips move constantly and metabolise filler faster. Expect noticeable swelling for the first 24 to 48 hours. Lips swell more than anywhere else on the face and will look larger than the final result at first. Most of that settles within three days, with the true result at about two weeks. Bruising is possible and usually minor. If you have an event coming up, book at least two weeks ahead.

Filler starts at $700 per syringe. Lips are usually one syringe, so a first-time lip treatment generally sits at that starting price. Larger areas such as cheeks or jawline need more product and are quoted accordingly. Your provider assesses you and gives you the full cost before anything is injected, with no estimate that changes afterwards.

They do different things. Lip filler adds volume and can reshape the lip border, with results lasting six to twelve months. A lip flip uses a few units of neurotoxin to relax the muscle so the upper lip rolls outward and shows more pink, with no added volume, and it lasts two to three months. If your lips are thin and you want them fuller, filler is the answer. If you have reasonable volume but your upper lip disappears when you smile, a lip flip may be all you need. Some patients have both. We will tell you which one actually fits your goal rather than selling you both.

Joey Seson, MSN, APRN-Rx, MBA is our founder and lead injector, an advanced practice registered nurse with prescriptive authority, licensed in Hawaii, and a national trainer and key opinion leader for Merz Aesthetics and Revance, meaning he teaches injection technique to other providers. Fay Stearns, MSN, ACNP, CPNP-AC, Sarah Seson, RN, BSN and Stacy Muse, RN, BSN also inject.
