It depends on the area and on how strong the muscle is. These are BOTOX® Cosmetic units — Dysport, Xeomin and Daxxify are dosed on different scales, so these numbers do not transfer between products. Frown lines (the 11s): about 20 units. Forehead: 10 to 20 units. Crow’s feet: about 12 units per side. Masseter, for jaw slimming: 20 to 50 units per side (off-label). Lip flip: 4 to 6 units (off-label). Gummy smile: 2 to 4 units per side (off-label). Chin dimpling: 2 to 6 units (off-label). Neck bands: 25 to 50 units (off-label). Most first-time patients treating one area land between 20 and 40 units. Your provider measures and quotes your exact dose before anything is injected, so you know the cost up front.

Sarah Seson, RN, BSN sees patients at our Kailua clinic on windward Oahu. The 11s are the two vertical lines between your eyebrows — the glabellar lines — that deepen when you frown or concentrate. They are the most commonly treated area with neurotoxin and they respond well, usually with about 20 units of BOTOX® Cosmetic. Treating them softens a permanently stern or tired look without freezing your expression. Most patients see change in three to seven days, with full effect at about two weeks.

Yes. A lip flip uses 4 to 6 units placed just above the upper lip, relaxing the muscle so the lip rolls slightly outward and shows more pink. It makes the upper lip look fuller without adding any filler — useful if you want a subtle change, or if your upper lip disappears when you smile. The effect is modest and lasts about two to three months, shorter than other neurotoxin areas. If you want real added volume, lip filler is the better choice, and we will tell you which one fits your goal. The lip flip is a commonly performed off-label use of neurotoxin.

It often can. A gummy smile shows more upper gum than you would like when you smile, usually because the muscle that lifts the upper lip pulls strongly. A small dose — typically 2 to 4 units per side — relaxes that muscle so the lip lifts a little less, covering more of the gum line. It is a precise, low-dose treatment and over-treating it affects your smile, so it should only be done by an experienced injector. This is a commonly performed off-label use of neurotoxin.

Yes — masseter treatment does both. The masseter is the thick chewing muscle at the back of your jaw. If you clench or grind your teeth it enlarges over time and squares off the lower face. Relaxing it with neurotoxin, typically 20 to 50 units per side, slims the jawline over several weeks and usually eases clenching, jaw soreness and the headaches that come with it. It takes longer to show than forehead treatment — plan on four to six weeks — and tends to last longer, often five to six months. Masseter injection is a commonly performed off-label use of neurotoxin. If you grind your teeth at night, mention it. It changes how we dose.

Because a unit is not the same thing from product to product. Each neurotoxin has its own potency, so the number of units needed for the same result differs — which means comparing per-unit prices between brands will mislead you. Our per-unit prices are BOTOX® Cosmetic $14, Xeomin $10, Daxxify $7, and Dysport $14 per 3 units. But Xeomin is dosed about 1 to 1 with BOTOX, Daxxify about 2 to 1, and Dysport about 3 to 1. So the cost for the same result is $14 with BOTOX® Cosmetic, $10 with Xeomin, $14 with Daxxify and $14 with Dysport. Xeomin is our best value — about 29% less than BOTOX® Cosmetic for the same result. For frown lines, about 20 BOTOX units’ worth, that is roughly $200 with Xeomin and about $280 with the other three. Daxxify’s advantage is not price, it is duration — many patients get six months or more from it against three to four months for BOTOX® Cosmetic. Your provider will tell you which product suits your muscle strength, your schedule and your budget.
